Barthe argues that there are five narrative codes which are applicable to all texts-some open, some closed. He suggests that texts with 'open' codes can be read in a variety of different ways, whereas within 'closed' texts there is only one unequivocal reading. The codes which will feature most prominently in our video are as follows:
- The Semantic code
- The Symbolic code
- The Cultural/Referential code
In order for the narrative codes we use in our video to be identified and appreciated by viewers, we will require a knowledgeable audience who are aware of our genre's characteristics. These codes will assist the repeatability of our music video, ensuring that consumers will want to view it again and again.
The semantic code consists of two separate areas: the denotation and the connotation. The denotations within the video are elements which are obviously perceived in the visuals. This will apply to our video as it isn't conceptually based and as a result is fairly straightforward in terms of the action in the footage. For example, viewers will be able to note that there is a boy and girl in the video- Ellie who is the focus of our attention and lip syncing while the Alex is less prominent in the video. As we are filming in a grand ballroom and will style the models in a polished manner, viewers will connote wealth and sophistication.
The symbolic code will also be present within the footage as certain aspects of the video will attempt to convey less obvious meanings to the audience. Throughout the visuals, the expressions of the artists will remain quite distinct- with Ellie looking vacant and Alex possessing a more enigmatic expression. As a result, this will symbolise that the artists are quite mysterious and in a dream- like state. Because this will surround our artists in obscurity, viewers attention will remain with them throughout and they will
However, the most important code in our video will be the cultural code as it's crucial that it's understood in order for our video to be fully enjoyed by the viewer. Certain elements of the video will be conventional of the Indie Pop/ Synth genre as we are planning to film in a large empty ballroom. This type of setting may not be appreciated if the audience aren't aware of other videos who follow a similar style- such as Au Revoir Simone's 'Somebody Who'. The obscure camerawork we intend to use in our video also requires a knowledgable audience in order to be properly enjoyed. The use of these three codes combined will hopefully help to shape a memorable and successful video.
